Speeding ticket? How many points it carries, and what it can cost you.

In New York, a speeding ticket carries 3 to 11 points, depending on how far over the limit the ticket says you were. Points only go on your record if you're convicted. (DMV)

Other points from the last 18 months add up: 6 or more in 18 months brings the state fee ($100 a year for 3 years, plus $25 a year for each point over 6), and 11 in 24 months can mean a suspension. (DMV, DMV)

Before you plead

What happens next depends on where you got the ticket.

New York City

  • Traffic tickets that aren't criminal charges go to the DMV's Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB).
  • If you plead guilty, you can't change your plea.
  • If you don't answer on time, your license will be suspended.

Long Island and the rest of the state

  • Tickets go to a local court or traffic agency, not the NYC TVB.
  • Greg takes tickets in courts anywhere in New York State, including all 5 boroughs, Nassau and Suffolk.
  • Points count from the ticket date

They stop counting toward your total 24 months after the violation date. (DMV)

  • A course helps, but only so much

A DMV-approved defensive driving course can subtract 4 points when the DMV counts toward a suspension, but the points stay on your record. (DMV)
